    Marfa, the Mayor’s Wife

Kolokol is proud to announce the first full English translation of Nikolai Karamzin’s classic tale of love, war and betrayal. Set against the backdrop of 1470s Novgorod, this historical novel recounts the city’s battle for self-rule against the tyranny of Ivan III’s Muscovy. The leader of the pro-independence faction is Marfa (sometimes called Martha the Mayoress), the widow of the city’s former mayor.

The book’s themes of freedom and autocracy are of strong contemporary relevance, while its depiction of a female leader is unusual for its time and setting. The edition is fully annotated and includes an Afterword exploring the real history behind the novel.

The book is available in paperback and e-book via https://amzn.eu/d/0ceQWBT. Note that the Kindle version can be read on any smartphone or mobile device, or in a web browser.
